only useful to farmers and sailors and werewolves

I was sorry that the Saints lost but (no offense NE fans) at least we're spared a Bears v. Patriots Super Bowl, which was about the most boring-est thing I could imagine.

Anyway, here (below the cut) are the liner notes for the 2nd part of my "stuff I was listening to in '06" compilation

NO ORDINARY KITCHEN: it's my own design

01. "Everybody Wants to Rule the World (Urban Mix)" :: Tears for Fears (Songs from the Big Chair - Deluxe Edition)
I don't know that ...Big Chair really merits a 2CD re-issue. BUT, it included this mix, which I used to have on 12-inch vinyl and sold off years and years ago. So it's all good. It's all about the horn section
02. "33 Pharell" :: TBA Empty (Stupid Rotation)
Natalie Beridze from Tblisi, Georgia, now working with Thomas Brinkmann and his Max Ernst label. This is one of the more "pop" tracks on the CD, or as pop as it gets in the world of minimalist European techno. No idea if the title is a Neptunes reference.
03. "Batine Acid" :: Aphex Twin (Chosen Lords)
Richard! D! James!
04. "Not Intended For Use In The Operation Of..." :: !!Swanhunter (File Under: Indeterminate)
Straight outta Providence. The title actually goes on for another month and a half (you can check his site for complete details). Kicks ass and takes names, in digital stylee.
05. "Mr. Ghost Goes To Town" : the John Buzon Trio (Organs In Orbit - VA)
The CD features the swingin' sounds of the mighty Hammond organ. Sadly, liner notes don't provide any info on the John Buzon Trio, creators of this tasty slab of exotica, other than that their album was recorded in 1958.
06. "Still Is Still Moving To Me" :: Toots & the Maytals w/ Willie Nelson (One World, Many Cultures - VA)
Toots covers a Willie tune. Willie sits in. You hang around long enough, you see just about everything, I guess
07. "Lowlands Low" :: Bryan Ferry and Antony (Rogue's Gallery - VA)
Another track from the only collection of pirate ballads and sea songs you'll ever need. Bryan Ferry brings the suave. Antony (of Antony and the Johnsons) brings the artsy post-rock falsetto. One of the mellower tracks from the CD
08. "Kelle Magni (Encore)" :: Cheikh Lô (Lamp Fall)
The CD was recorded in Senegal and Brazil and pulls off an amazing fusion of those sounds. This track stays closer to home, with a sound reminiscent of Orchestra Baobab.
09. "Red Bula" :: Balkan Beat Box v. Mahala Rai Banda (Electric Gypsyland 2 - VA)
Brooklyn-based neo-gypsy band remixing one of my fave Rom bands (which includes former members of Taraf de Haidouks). Both the Electric Gypsyland comps are killer.
10. "Mayoral" :: Novalima (Afro)
Four Lima-based producers explore and update the Afro-Peruvian sound. The CD tends more towards downtempo, but this track is definitely ready for the dancefloor.
11. "Niger Delta Jam" :: Dede (Lagos Stori Plenti - VA)
Afrobeat, from a collection of new sounds from Nigeria
