it's a good business to be in if you know where to get the meat cheap

Double flashback meme fun (for no particular reason I can think of)

  1. Open up the music player on your computer.
  2. Set it to play your entire music collection.
  3. Hit the "shuffle" command.
  4. Tell us the title of the next twelve songs that show up (with their musicians), no matter how embarrassing. That's right, no skipping that Carpenters tune that will totally destroy your hip credibility. It's time for total musical honesty.
  5. If you get the same artist twice, you may skip the second (or third, or etc.) occurances. You don't have to, but since randomness could mean you end up with a list of twelve songs by four artists, you can if you'd like.

"marta's song" :: Deep Forest
"aawargi" :: Asha Bhosle
"death by venom" :: Portion Control
"la boite de nuit" :: Francoiz Breut
"time out" :: Fanfare Ciocarlia
"root down" :: Beastie Boys
"plunging hornets" :: Venetian Snares
"maxutu" :: Cibelle v. Koçani Orkestar
"el piton" :: El Angel
"minor vamp (basement boys remix)" :: Curtis Fuller
"take ur time" :: Part 2
"86" :: Apollo Nove

Comments

Poison Arrow - ABC
Milonga en Re - Astor Piazzolla
Nightclubbing - Iggy Pop
Love Hanger - Diana Ross
Every Little Thing (He) Does is Magic - Shawn Colvin
Clubland - Elvis Costello and the Attractions
Fortunate Son - John Fogerty
In Paris (sountrack: The Age of Innocence) - Elmer Bernstein
Winter Wonderland - Lavay Smith
Don't Lie - Black Eyed Peas
La Soledad - Pink Martini
Kick - Adam and the Antz (I seem to recall the "Antz" spelling was used on the first couple of albums before switching to "Ants").
bonus 13th track to contrast with Kick -- Aeternam from Mozart's Requiem.

I took this challenge even though I don't give a flying fuck about hip cred and freely admit there is a ton of shit in my collection that isn't hip. However, why would The Carpenters destroy your hip cred anyway? Even Sonic Youth likes the Carpenters.

Gimme the Prize (Kurgan's Theme) - Queen
Letting You Know - Monster Movie
Sit Down, Stand Up (Live 2003-11-27 Earl's Court London) - Radiohead
Love These Goon Shows! [Speech] - The Beatles
Jeff Quits - Mothers of Invention
Dedication - Beastie Boys
Can't Be So Sad - Moby Grape
Suede - Tori Amos
The Love You Save - Jackson Five
One Double One Oh! [Instrumental Version] - Dick Dale and the Dale Tones
Little Bo Peep Has Lost Her Jeep - Spike Jones and his City Slickers
Mister Superstar - Marilyn Manson
Spirit in the Black - Slayer

Funny it actually hit three of my most favorite bands (Beatles, Radiohead, and Queen) and oddly two audio excerpts (Beatles, Mothers).

Even tho I don't like the Carpenters, I'd have to agree that using them as short-hand for "not hip" is a bit lame and past it. Not that I have any frikkin' idea what the hipoisie is listening to these days but I think the Carpenters were re-habilitated sometime in the 90s. I just cribbed that text along with the original meme.

Hassan I Sabha - Hawkwind
I Wish The Whole Damn World Was In A Bottle - Gee Mr. Tracy
Battery - Kill Memory Crash
First One Out - Adrian Smith
What You Mean - Minimal Compact
El Mondil De Carolina - Radio Tarifa
An Armed Response - !!swanhunter
Yummer Yummer Man - Danielle Dax
Funny Little Feeling - Rock 'n' Roll Soldiers (not sure where that came from; I've never heard of them)
The American Way - The Crystal Method

And clearly I can't count to twelve. (The next two were Carpenters tracks anyway.)

Hey Paul, I love that Spike Jones song! I played it on the 4th of July jazz standards show on WXDU.
