I continue not to have any idea what the hell is going on in GOP-land. I read things that seem like plausible explanation for this ginormous meltdown they seem to be having but then things get even fucking stupider. So here's what I'm wondering. Are we actually seeing the end of a cycle? Everyone says that the GOP isn't just going to go away or disappear overnight. And of course I'm sure that's true. But, what, I wonder, were people saying about the Whigs? There was a last election for the Whigs. They won and then they stopped winning and eventually they were gone. Were there people at the time talking about how the Whigs were surely representative of a sentiment in (and segment of) American politics that would never change? Or were there people shoveling dirt on their heads while they were still moving? Probably both. And, yes, I'm sure this is something I should be looking up instead of sitting here writing about how I should go look it up.
