Top Chef finale! Yukon Cornelius vs. the Miser Brothers. I was planning to live blog the show but we managed to miracle into tonight's community dinner at Panciuto so I ended up overfull and unable to do any more than watch the show.
Spoilers below
Obviously, I can't actually complain about the judging, since they tasted the food and I didn't. On top of that, I don't think it's even terribly fair to complain about any comments the judges might have made (about their reasons for voting the way they did) that aired during the show. Those comments are selected by the producers and intended to be seen before the results are announced. Over the next few days, most of the judges should have blog posts up on the Bravo site providing more context for their decision now that we now what it is. I'm particularly interested to see what Colicchio has to say. I read his comments about Hosea won and even though I understood where he was coming from, I still wasn't convinced. And I wouldn't be surprised if I have a similar reaction to his explanation as to why Michael V. beat Brian V. Maybe it'll make sense. Maybe not. I'm also more than ever of the opinion that what I want from the experience of watching Top Chef and what the shows' producers think I should want are not at all the same things. Maybe I'm idiosyncratic and weird but, for me, if they spend the whole season telling me that Kevin's a great chef and a nice guy and Michael V. is a great chef but kind of a dick, well, when it gets to the end and Kevin loses and Michael wins, that's not gonna be very satisfying. And seeing as how they knew that ending, I don't get why they told the story that way.
