one day you will wear cardigans

Last night's movie (pt 1): Crossing the Bridge: the Sound of Istanbul, a fascinating documentary. The hook for the movie is a visit by Alexander Hacke (bassist from Neubauten) to record the music of Istanbul. He's in the movie a lot, usually around the edges. I found him an entertaining tour guide & much less of a distraction than Ry Cooder in BVSC. The music covered includes traditional Kurdish songs, hip-hop (complete w/ Istanbul b-boys), classic Turkish rock (inc. a segment w/ Erkin Koray), punk, Romani, raki, pop of various kinds (inc. Orhan Gencebay, who seems to be the Amitabh of Turkey -- lots of film clips from the 70s, many of which featured Gencebay, his stylin' mustache, and his saz), and electronica (Mercan Dede!!!)
Highly recommended an well worth tracking down. It's on DVD and also showing on Sundance, if you get that channel.
