So... part 2 of last Sunday's NFNS involved the contestant's having to come up with a food product, package 50 samples, present to some buyer's plus a special surprise guest. Who turned out to be Martha Stewart. One of the things I like about NFNS is that, since it's a contest to host a TV show, there's really no challenge that's too off the wall and out-there. People can, I think, legitimately complain that many of the challenges on Top Chef have little, if anything to do with the skill-set required to be an actual top chef. But hosting a TV show? That could involve any number of crazy-ass things so all bets are off.
There were basically 3 parts to the challenge: coming up w/ and creating a product; selling to buyers; impressing Martha Stewart. Of the products created, I thought Adam (BBQ spice rub), Aaron (vinaigrette), Ensign Ro (orange-basil marmalade) had some good stuff. Kelseybot (sloppy joe sauce), Jeffrey (season salt), Boring Jen (cheese sauce for pasta), Shane (cherry/cognac sauce for meat) and Nipa (cayenne/sugar blend) most definitely did not. Unlike the potato challenge, what we saw of this provided few surprises. For the most part, the people with lesser food did weaker presentations. Jen and Jeffrey were boring. Kelseybot was insanely perky. Ensign Ro demonstrated a definite background in (or at least familiarity with) food merchandising. Adam broke out some blues harp for Martha Stewart. Ridiculous but showed a real commitment to going all in. He, Ensign Ro and Aaron were the winners for the week. I thought they let Nipa off the hook way too easily. Her product was a mix of 2 ingredients (sugar and cayenne) and I don't care how much she babbled about "the secret" being in the proportions. It was clear that the retail buyers saw right thru that and called it for the BS it was. Kelseybot took some major grief for her insane perky-osity. And responded by breaking out with the sobbing and boo-hoo-ing. I do hope there won't be someone busting out in tears every week. What I loved about that, tho, was that her defense seemed to be that she'd been watching every season of NFNS and had applied for every season and how much it meant to her yadda etc. So her fakeness is completely sincere, dammit. Seriously, tho, her problem, I think, is much like the problems I used to have with genre stuff that would show up in the fee room at Scott Meredith (lo these many years ago). It's hard to quantify exactly why a romance novel (say) that's exactly like every other romance novel that's published doesn't make the grade. A lot of times there's actually no difference other than that Writer Not-You already has a gig with the romance novel writing industry so that if all Writer You can bring is exactly the same thing... well, why do they need You when they've already got Not-You? If that makes any sense.
Getting back to Kelsey, I think her problems are that she's seen every single episode of Rachael Ray EVAH and decided that what it takes to be a Food TV star. Unfortunately, FN doesn't need another Rachael Ray, as they've already got one. Plus, Ray, for all her flaws (hey, this post is long enough already...) does seem to be fairly natural on camera. Kelsey, however, does not. Altho I do think that she's actually very sincere in her superficiality. The nothing that she's expressing is deeply personal and important to her.
Of course, all the angst w/ Kelseybot was just a red herring. Jen gets dinged for her basic boringness again. But Jeffrey gets sent home for being Even More Boring. He did seem like a nice and interesting guy but he was death on TV -- he could never quite pull it together so I can't say I was surprised to see him go. Too bad, tho.
Next week: In the Navy!! They all slope off to visit the USN. With Mike Symon. Plus Ensign Ro falls on her ass. This is roughly the same as the boot camp visit from last season. Altho they'll be hard pressed to top the episode of Master Chef where they went to Sandringham and had to do all their cooking in an actual field kitchen. Also, is it just me, or wasn't there another reality show that did an episode with the Navy? Maybe Design Star? Or maybe I'm just confused...
