While I was out surfin' the waves of pre-holiday consumerism, I bought a little sumthin sumthin for myself. Was digging thru the always disorganized world music section at Borders Chapel Hill when I found a couple of CDs by Monterey's El Gran Silencio. I've seen them mentioned around here and there but I think XDU has all of exactly one song by them (on some comp or other). But it's killer. They've got that Monterey colombiana/cumbia working. I picked up what I think is their most recent, 2003's Super Riddim Internacional! Vol. 1 and it's kicking much ass. They fall about smack in the middle between Control Machete and Celso Pina. (grr... while I was googling around to see if they had a website, I saw a listing for a show EGS did with Control Machete in Tucson)

I looove EGS! Try their first cd, Libres y Locos (I would be happy to lend it to you along with their second cd, Chuntaros Radio Poder). When Super Riddim Internacional Vol. 1 came out last fall, I had read that a Vol. 2 was supposed to come out this fall, but I have yet to see it.

Hmmm, maybe EGS would make good backfill purchase selections ...

Hey. The world is a disorganized place. Why shouldn't our world music section be disorganized, too?

well, i can't argue with that...
